Setting Up Screen Time on Student Mac Laptops

  1. Purpose
    This guide provides parents and guardians with step-by-step instructions on how to configure Screen Time on student Mac laptops. Screen Time can help monitor usage, set downtime schedules, manage app limits, and support healthy device habits.

  2. Scope
    This procedure applies to all student Mac laptops. It is intended for parents and guardians who wish to manage and monitor their child’s device usage using Apple’s Screen Time features.

  3. Requirements
    A student Mac laptop running a supported version of macOS.

  4. Procedure

Enable Screen Time on a Mac

  • Click the Apple Menu () in the top-left corner of the screen.
  • Select System Settings
  • Click Screen Time from the sidebar.

Set a Screen Time Passcode (Recommended)

  • In Screen Time, click Lock Screen Time Settings

  • Set a Screen Time Passcode that the student does not know.

  • Record the passcode in a secure location.

Configure Downtime

Downtime restricts device usage during specified hours.

  • In Screen Time, select Downtime

  • Turn Downtime on.

  • Set the desired start and end times.

  • Once the allocated screen time is exceeded, restricted apps will be greyed out and inaccessible.

  • To allow apps during screen time sessions , In Screen Time, select Always Allowed

  • Select the desired app
